How Technology Has Changed The Way We Watch and Play Sport

Updated: Mar 17, 2018

The way technology has changed over the decades has impacted our habits around when and how we watch our favourite sporting events.

By 2009, 3 out of 4 britons had home access to the internet either via a smartphone or PC which, going back to 1950’s owning a tv with hour channels was one of life's biggest luxuries.

The advance in technology not only allows us to watch sporting events in real time, but also record and watch at a later date. This may not seem like a big deal now, but looking back, video tape recording was all that was available. We now have the likes of Sky and Virgin along with specialised sports channels including Sky Sports, EuroSport and even a channel dedicated to Manchester United Football Club however, the internet has become so influential in delivering updates on sport and also offering live commentary.

Not only has the ways in which we can watch sporting events changed, so has the quality. High Definition (HD) TV has now become a norm in today’s society and because of this and surround sound, we can rival the experience of actually going to a live event. We no longer have to deal with endless crowds and extortionate ticket prices. If you are looking to buy tickets to an event, it is much easier to do so now that eCommerce is more apparent than ever.

Not only has technology changed the way we watch sport, but also the way we play it. Clothing and equipment design has also improved significantly due to technology advances. Motion capture and 3D modelling has revolutionised the design of shoes, clothing, swimwear, helmets and even golf clubs, tennis racquets and bikes. Because of this, abilities improve as well as the overall look of clothing and equipment.

I don’t know about you, but I love Fantasy Football. We are fortunate to have the technology that allows us to chose our dream football team (of course, budget depending) and winning points based on individual player performance. This has created a whole, new fantasy world that we all get sucked into.

Watching and playing sport is an evolving process, one that has come on leaps and bounds since mid 90’s and as soon as more advances happen, I will be one of the first to write about it.
